Fifteen years ago, Marko Kamenarić took his first step into the recycling industry as a sorter at Hamburger Recycling Croatia. At the time, he never imagined that his role in sorting paper would lead him to a leadership position. We caught up with him in between daily shifts.
Marko, how many positions did you take on your first 15 years in Hamburger Recycling?
I was first a sorter, then forklift operator, shift leader, scale operator, and since 2021 I was the Depot Manager for the Sveta Helena location. After opening our second location in 2024, I have been the Depot Manager for the Zagreb location.
Reflecting on your career, what’s the one thing that sticks out?
Every position teaches you something, even if you don't see it at first. What seemed like small tasks at the beginning became the foundation for everything I do today. I understand the challenges my team faces because I walked in their shoes. That’s how I can guide and mentor others, and also give them the opportunity to grow and advance within the company.
After your sorter position, you were promoted rather quickly.
Yes, I moved on to operate forklifts and excavators, and I learned the technical aspects of logistics and handling of PfR (Paper for Recycling). Each new responsibility was a steppingstone, preparing me for the next position.
What’s your daily job as Depot Manager?
As Depot Manager, I oversee daily operations, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Currently, I’m managing a team of 20 people – sorters, shift leaders, scale operators, forklift operators and the entire logistics. We need to be efficient, meet quotas, maintain safety standards, and uphold the Hamburger Recycling’s commitment to sustainability and circular economy principles.
What is your leadership style?
My managers through the years were Antun, Dario and Jadranko. They helped shape my leadership style, which is clear communication, strategic planning, and a strong team-oriented approach. Leadership isn't about telling people what to do, it's about showing them how to do it. I still jump in when needed because I know what it takes to get the job done.
What would you say to people considering a career in the recycling industry?
A common misconception is that working in recycling means dealing with bad smells and messy conditions. People assume that recycling smells bad, but the truth is, when done properly, it's just well-organized materials waiting for their next purpose. It's not waste—it's the beginning of something new.
What has kept you in the same company for 15 years?
The people. The company believes in us, gives us opportunities to grow, and makes us feel like we matter. When you take on new responsibilities, it's never easy at first. But that's where growth happens—you figure things out, and suddenly, what once seemed impossible becomes part of your routine.
